Das Deutsche Schulsystem The German school system
In Germany, school attendance is compulsory; every child has to attend school.
On average, elementary school begins at age 5 to 6. Most Elementary schools have either grades 1-4 or 1-6. At the end of elementary school, the teacher will recommend a school that will meet the educational needs of the child. In Germany secondary education is based on a three tier system. The types of secondary schools are Hauptschule, Realschule and Gymnasium. All of the programs at these schools continue until at least 10th grade. Students who attend the Gymnasium finish school after the 12th grade. Each of these school types leads to a different diploma: Haupt- and Realschule to Haupt- and Realschuldiploma, the Gymnasium to Abitur. Abitur is necessary in order to attend University. Nowadays there are new school types in which you can do all of these diplomas. These schools are called Gesamtschule. In Germany, public University costs the student nothing. |
